Light unbuttons the dream
of animals you bring home
without asking. I catch sight
of a baby bison as you pull down
the garage door, hoping I don’t see
what’s the size of a grown greyhound.
and its twin you hustle
downstairs to the family room.
How could you? I try not to scream.
Did you buy timothy hay? No
answer, face blank. These are wild
animals. I threaten to leave, to throw
you out, the word divorce a thick film
on my tongue. Already, I hear the bison
whine—a high, desperate keen.
