Praise
“To heed the call of the Orphic Voice is to recognize the love that moves the sun and other stars. But it’s also to be lured to the underworld, where hellish transformations & strange boons await. And it’s to risk eventual decapitation. The tree rising in Michael Autrey’s ear gives shade & draws lightning equally to anyone summoned to climb it, seek shelter beneath it, or chop it down, as need sees fit. Trust your instincts but be prepared for the trouble falling with the darkness.” —Peter O’Leary
Excerpt
An August Day in the Ideal City
The hill is steep.
There is no place for outskirts.
One is either in or out;
on the road or off it.
Comings and goings
are known for hours in advance,
and mourned for hours after.
Dust rises from the road
like smoke from a stick of incense
and the wanderer’s mother
begins to dice an onion
as the setting sun
tints distant glaciers
the color of apricots.
